Tahiti to Moorea ferry: timetable, prices and tips

Moorea is less than an hour by ferry from Papeete. Three companies make the crossing every day, from downtown Papeete to the Vaiare quay.

Three companies, Aremiti, Tauati Ferry and Vaeara'i, sail every day from the Papeete ferry terminal to the Vaiare quay on Moorea. The crossing takes 30 to 55 minutes depending on the ship; on weekdays there are 16 to 18 departures a day from Papeete to Moorea, the first around 5:15 am.

Fenua Move sells no tickets: you book with the company, on its website or at its ticket desk.

Who sails

Three companies link Tahiti and Moorea: Aremiti, with the Aremiti 5 and Aremiti 6, Tauati Ferry and Vaeara'i. All of them leave from Papeete and arrive at Vaiare, and all of them carry foot passengers, cars and two-wheelers.

The crossing time depends on the ship. According to the timetables the carriers publish, it takes about 30 minutes with Aremiti, 45 minutes with Tauati Ferry and 55 minutes with Vaeara'i.

On weekdays there are 16 to 18 departures a day from Papeete to Moorea, all carriers together, and as many the other way; at the weekend, more like 12 or 13. The first ferry leaves Papeete around 5:15 am on weekdays and around 7 am at the weekend; the last one leaves between 5:30 pm and 7 pm depending on the day. From Moorea, departures run from about 5 am to 6:30 pm. These figures come from the October 2026 timetables: the carriers change them, so always check the day's schedule.

What the crossing costs

One-way fares in Pacific francs (XPF), as the carriers publish them. Resident fares are for residents of French Polynesia, who may be asked for proof; a visitor pays the visitor fare.

Where to board

On Tahiti, the ferries leave from the Papeete ferry terminal (gare maritime), on the downtown waterfront. On Moorea, they arrive at the Vaiare quay, on the east coast of the island.

From Tahiti-Faa'a airport, the ferry terminal is a few kilometres away by taxi or bus. Leave some margin at rush hour, in the morning and late afternoon.

Buying a ticket

Tickets are sold at the counter, in Papeete or in Vaiare, or on each carrier's website. Some fares, such as Vaeara'i's first boat of the morning (‘A’ahiata), are sold only at the counter. Fenua Move sells no tickets: the app shows the seats left that each carrier publishes for foot passengers, cars and two-wheelers, and its Book button opens the carrier's website.

Weather and cancellations

In heavy swell or for a technical reason, a carrier may cancel a departure or shift its times. It then publishes a notice. Fenua Move shows these notices as they are, in French as the carriers write them, at the top of the timetable and on the departure they concern. The app also gives the weather and the sea state at both quays. Follow a departure and you get a reminder before it leaves and a notification if its time changes or it is cancelled.

What about the Leeward Islands?

Further out, Apetahi Express and Vaeara'i link Tahiti with Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a and Bora Bora. These crossings take several hours, with stops on the way: Fenua Move shows them one by one.
